Home Safety Checklist

A comprehensive room-by-room guide to creating a safer home environment for aging in place with confidence and independence.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, but many can be prevented with simple home modifications. This checklist helps you identify and address common hazards throughout your home.

Entryways & Hallways

  • Remove loose rugs or secure with non-slip backing
  • Install handrails on both sides of stairs
  • Ensure adequate lighting with easy-to-reach switches
  • Clear pathways of cords, clutter, and obstacles
  • Add motion-sensor lights for nighttime navigation

Living Areas

  • Arrange furniture to create clear walking paths
  • Secure electrical cords along walls
  • Use chairs with sturdy armrests for easier standing
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach
  • Remove low coffee tables that pose tripping hazards

Kitchen

  • Store heavy items at waist level to avoid reaching
  • Use non-slip mats near sink and stove
  • Install lever-style faucet handles
  • Keep a fire extinguisher easily accessible
  • Consider automatic stove shut-off devices

Bathroom

  • Install grab bars near toilet and in shower/tub
  • Use a raised toilet seat if needed
  • Place non-slip mats in tub/shower and on floor
  • Set water heater to 120°F to prevent scalding
  • Consider a shower chair or transfer bench

Bedroom

  • Ensure bed is at appropriate height for easy access
  • Keep a lamp and phone within reach of bed
  • Install nightlights along path to bathroom
  • Remove wheels from bed frames if unstable
  • Use a bed rail if assistance is needed getting up
